On May 14, 2024, after Google I/O 2024 wrapped up, I got to try out Google’s Project Starline for myself. While it wasn’t a brand-new reveal at I/O 2024, Project Starline made a big impact, standing out as one of the most exciting things of the day.
Project Starline, which was first shown off at Google I/O 2021, is all about making video calls feel incredibly real. The version they had on display in 2023 included a big screen, powerful speakers, and a bunch of cameras and sensors. These gadgets work together to create 3D versions of people during video calls, making it feel like you’re actually in the same room.
When I sat down for my demo with Jason Lawrence, one of the folks who helped create Project Starline, I was struck by how simple the setup was. It was just a chair, a table, and the Project Starline gear.
Before we started the call, I snapped some pics of the setup, but Google asked me not to take any during the call since regular cameras can’t quite capture the magic of Project Starline.
As soon as I sat down, 3D versions of both Jason and myself popped up on our screens. Unlike other video apps where you have to go through a whole process to get your 3D avatar set up, Starline just does it all in real-time, so you can jump right into the call.
The cool thing about Project Starline is how immersive it feels. Talking to Jason, it genuinely felt like we were sitting across from each other, not separated by screens. It took a moment to get used to making eye contact with him instead of looking at the camera, but once I did, it felt like a real conversation.
Sure, there were some little glitches here and there, like Jason’s hair looking a bit artificial and some pixelation on the screen if you really squinted. But during our chat, I didn’t really notice those things. I just felt like Jason was there with me, and it was mind-blowing.
Even in just 10 minutes, Project Starline showed me how it could change video calling. It’s not trying to replace in-person chats, but it’s a fantastic option for when you can’t be in the same room as someone. And the best part? It’s going to be available soon.
HP is teaming up with Google to bring Project Starline to folks like us in 2025. We don’t know all the details yet, but the thought of more people experiencing what I did is super exciting.
In the end, Project Starline isn’t just about video calling; it’s about bringing people closer together in a digital world. Like Jason said, “Seeing is believing,” and I can’t wait for more folks to see what Project Starline is all about—a sneak peek into a future where distance doesn’t get in the way of real connections.
